Fun Facts About Ferrets
How much do you know about pet ferrets? We thought it’d be fun to share some ferret facts to help you better prepare for ferret ownership. While you may already know some of these facts, we hope you’ll also learn something new.
1. Ferrets Are Weasels
Ferrets are weasels, and we don’t mean that in a derogatory way. Ferrets are part of the Mustela genus which includes polecats, stoats, and mink. Their scientific name is Mustela putorius furo, which roughly translates to “stinky weasel thief.”
2. Ferrets Were Ratters
Back in the 1860s, up until about WWII, ferrets would rat out the mischievous deeds of their companions. We’re kidding about the tattling, but it’s true that they were used as ratters in the 19th and 20th centuries. Ferrets were good at hunting rodents, so they were valuable for keeping said rodents out of grain stores.
3. Ferrets Are Little Thieves
The term “ferret” comes from the Latin word “furittus,” which means “little thief.”
4. Ferrets Have Fast Heart Rates
The normal heart rate for a ferret is about 200 to 250 beats per minute. The normal heart rate for humans is only 60 to 100 beats per minute.
5. Ferrets Are Great at Business
A group of ferrets is referred to as a business. Because of their sociable nature, ferrets are good at living in these “businesses.” There are also a number of other names used to refer to ferrets.
Female ferrets that are intact are called jills, whereas spayed females are called sprites. Neutered males are called gibs and intact males are called hobs. Baby ferrets are known as kits.
Ferrets Are Cute and Their Names Can Be Too
Adopting a ferret is super exciting. These animals are sociable, playful, and a lot of fun to interact with and watch. Though they can be adopted alone, it’s often best to adopt ferrets in pairs. Because of their friendly and playful nature, it’s beneficial for them to have a companion and playmate.
These animals are smart, silly, and adorable. They’re full of personality which makes them a joy to keep as pets. Though choosing a name can sometimes be a bit of a challenge, we hope you were able to find a cute name that matches your ferret’s adorable personality.
