Snake Facts
Snakes are fascinating creatures and are certainly very different from common household pets like cats and dogs. Let’s see how much you know about snakes with these snake facts!
1. There Are 3,000 Species of Snakes
Of those 3,000 species, six hundred are venomous, but only 200 of those can harm humans. Snakes are found all over the world, absent only in New Zealand, Antarctica, Iceland, Ireland, and Greenland.
2. Snakes Can Unhinge Their Jaws
Snakes aren’t sitting around with a fork and knife cutting apart the meat they’re eating. Unlike many other animals, they’re unable to rip or tear food apart. Instead, they can swallow large prey whole by unhinging their jaws!
3. Some Snakes Can Fly
There are five species of snakes that can “fly,” although gliding would be a better term. These snakes live in rainforests in Indonesia and Western India. They are able to flatten their body enough to double their width, which allows them to glide gracefully through the air.
4. Snakes Use Their Tongues to Smell
Snakes have forked tongues, rather than noses, that allow them to smell. They also have bones in their lower jaws that can pick up the vibrations of scurrying animals on the ground.
5. Some Snakes Give Birth
Most of us know that snakes lay eggs. However, there are some species of snakes, like sea snakes, that give live birth just like humans and other mammals.
Snakes Are Cute, Too
Snakes are interesting pets to own. Though they aren’t the type of pet you can cuddle or interact with in terms of playing, they’re fascinating to watch. Of course, they can be held and their smooth bodies provide an unusual sensory experience compared to furry pets.
The internet is also starting to realize how cute snakes can be. We absolutely love seeing viral posts of adorable snakes in silly hats! Though not everyone thinks snakes are cute, we think they look totally boopable and deserve to have a name that reflects that.
